SCS & PNS therapy is a well-established pain treatment used by doctors for more than 50 years. This type of treatment for chronic pain has proven to provide relief from both pain and emotional suffering. Chronic pain patients who are seeking an SCS, PNS or an intrathecal pump may have some level of pre-existing depression and anxiety, which may increase if the device becomes ineffective in reducing the patient’s pain level.
Treatment of chronic pain is multidisciplinary, drawing on cognitive and behavioral psychological therapies. Appropriate selection of patients helps ensure that implantable therapies are used for those who are most likely to benefit.
A psychological evaluation is required by your insurance company to help identify the right patient to achieve the maximum benefit from an implanted device. Patients can be more informed of their chances of success as well as the risks associated with the procedure.
